Windham High School has progressed to the list of 50 finalists, originally 500 schools in the country, selected by the Vans Shoe Company to compete in the next round of the Vans Custom Culture contest. The community is invited to view the original sneaker designs online at customculture.vans.com and vote now through May 3 for Senior Christine Hernandez and Junior Kylie Rivera’s creations.  The art students submitted designs around the themes, "Local Flavor" and "Off The Wall."

Ms. Hernandez’s Local Flavor design highlights the many unique features of Windham, including paintings of Windham’s Town Hall and the frog bridge, plus sculpted frogs and thread spools.  The design uses rich colors in a fanciful way.

Ms. Rivera’s design is “out of this world,” and includes ghouls and cows and a collection of other images, and sculpted green fingers creeping out of the front of the sneaker.

The original sneakers are on display in the entrance of Windham High School.  Art teacher Amanda Roohr submitted an impact document about how the $75,000 grand prize, to be awarded to the school whose student submits the winning design, could impact the Art Program in Windham. Public voting will narrow the field to the final selection of five school finalists that will be celebrated with a barbeque and live music at each school, then one winner will be selected to win the $75,000.

Vans Custom Culture contest was created to inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design and to bring attention to diminishing arts education budgets nationwide.
