Dear Windham High School Parents:
I am pleased to inform you that our new administrative team at Windham High School is in place and ready for a new school year. We would like to invite you to meet our Principals at a reception at Windham High School Media Center next Wednesday, July 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. That evening we will also present a fresh approach to the dress code requirements for the coming year.
New Administrative Team Brings Experience and New Ideas
As I announced in June, Interim Principal Vanessa Briales-Sosa is taking on the leadership role at Windham High School after serving as Assistant Principal for two years. Staff and parents have responded very positively to this news, and I am confident that Ms Sosa knows well what actions and opportunities will quickly benefit Windham High students.
Joining Ms Sosa is Randall Conway, the newly appointed Assistant Principal. Mr. Conway comes to Windham High School from Windsor Public Schools where he served two school years as district-wide School Psychologist. At Bridgeport Public School he was Principal of their Alternative High School and the Director of Alternative Education, and was also Assistant Principal with Capitol Region Education Council. Mr. Conway has also served as a State Trooper for 20 years. He received his advanced Educational degrees at American International College. We are extremely pleased to have Mr. Conway’s wide range of experience in urban education.
Recommended for hire for the vacant Assistant Principal position is a leader very familiar with Windham High School: Pamela Cavanagh. Ms. Cavanagh has taught here for many years, serving as a program leader for Windham High School science and engineering. Her experience here also includes 13 years teaching science at Windham Middle School where she was elected Teacher of the Year. She has pursued graduate bilingual education studies, and has been a contributing member of curriculum writing teams. Ms. Cavanagh also has the perspective of a Windham High parent because her two sons graduated from Windham High School. I believe her deep experience will serve our community well.
Our new leadership has been meeting to work out a plan for successful start-of-school, and to review the details to optimize our new Freshman Academy.
New Approach to Dress Code at Windham High School
At Wednesday’s reception we will also share with parents a new perspective on the dress code for the coming year. Students have brought thoughtful proposals to our administrators about their desire to self-express with their clothing choices. We are also sensitive to parents concerns about the cost of uniforms. We believe we have an approach that takes all of these views into consideration.
The administration previewed this fresh proposal with the high school’s School Governance Council representatives who are happy with the direction, and we are excited to share these plans with you on Wednesday.
I sincerely hope that you will join us at the reception July 26, introduce yourself to our leaders, and let them know your perspective on the future of Windham High School.
Patricia Garcia, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
