WINDHAM, CT–February 26, 2018 Staff members of Windham High School alerted the administration over the weekend that a student had made some alarming statements on social media that included threats to the Willimantic community.
Although there was no direct threat related to the high school, the district takes any report like this seriously and immediately informed the Willimantic Police Department who took action to locate and question the youth.
As an extra precaution the district asked for additional law enforcement presence during the school day today, Monday, February 26. The student is not attending school today.
The district has a responsibility to make sure that schools are safe learning environments for students and staff every day, and is working to make the school day as normal as possible.
“I am grateful that our staff was alert to the social media post, took it seriously and notified us,” says Superintendent Patricia Garcia. “In light of the heightened concern for safety, we cannot ignore expressed threats. We appreciate how responsive our local law enforcement officials are to helping keep our school and community safe.
“The district always encourages students and their parents to immediately report any safety concerns to a school administrator, School Resource Officer, school counselor, teacher or other employee. “
