The Importance of Literacy and Foundational Skills in Grades K–4
In grades K–4, children build the reading and writing skills that are the foundation for all future learning. These early years are when students learn letter sounds, vocabulary, and how to understand what they read. Strong literacy skills help students succeed not just in reading, but in every subject. When kids become confident readers early on, they are more likely to stay on track in school and enjoy learning.
How We Teach Literacy at Natchaug
At Natchaug School, we believe every child deserves the tools to become a confident, joyful reader. That’s why we use powerful, research-based programs to build strong literacy skills from the start. With the American Reading Company (ARC), students dive into books they love every day, growing as readers while discovering their passions. Our phonics program, UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute), gives students a strong foundation in how words work—setting them up for long-term success. Together, these programs help our students not only learn to read, but to love reading.
